Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian Martial Art that incorporates dance, acrobatics, and is commanded by music and energetic song. Its origins come from the Afro-Brazilian slaves who used this art as a means to strengthen community, revolt against their oppressors, it is an art-form that is over 500 years old.

Alpha Phi Omega (APO) is NIU's first and oldest co-ed service fraternity. Our chapter was founded on campus in November 1928. We are Northern Illinois University's anime club located in Room 170A in the Stevens Building on campus in DeKalb, Illinois. Our main activity is publicly showing different types of Japanese Animation (called anime), including movies, TV series, and direct-to-video releases. We show a variety of genres which include drama, comedy, romance, action, adventure, science fiction, and historical. These showings take place every Tuesday night and Thursday night from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm during the Fall and Spring Semesters. Please take a look at the Show Schedule page for a listing of what we are showing this semester. All of our showings are free and open to the public. fitness through physical exercise and growing into a close-knit community of trusted
team players. As a group we aim to serve the community by providing education about
safe and effective combat fighting, advocating for physical and mental fitness, and
providing activities for campus events in our affiliation with Northern Illinois

The Northern Illinois University Black Choir (NBC) was founded in 1968 by Kenneth Moore Lenon, on the college campus of Northern Illinois University. The foundation of this organization is that it served as the first non-Greek Black organization on the campus of NIU. Founded during a time of racial disparities and discrimination NBC was an outlet and a family for many Black students who loved music but did not have access to the universities choir. The Northern Illinois University Black Choir remains a dominant force on campus while providing, uplifting song, encouragement, and perpetuate the culture of music and other fine arts from the African American experience. The purpose of the choir is to be a performing group that presents and sings gospel and secular music so as to present the context, purpose, and meaning of gospel and secular music; which is Afro-American music with its origin in the earliest hymn traditions of slavery, combining spirituals, blues and jazz. We share cultural and genuine enjoyment of gospel music which acknowledges the benefits from an appreciation of cultural difference while maintaining a lifestyle of leadership.

The NIU Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club has been around campus for over 10 years and running! We practice and compete in the grappling sport of Jiu-Jitsu with members who have trained for years and teaching new members who are interested in learning a new martial art. We practice Tuesday-Thursday 7-9 at the Chick Evans field house and compete roughly 2-4 times a semester. All are welcome to learn the great Martial Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

We have weekly Small Groups for college students on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights and during this time, we share a meal, discuss relevant Bible topics intended to help people grow and live out their faith, and have a chance to pray for one another. Those that are involved in a small group often form real, lasting friendships. We also always have something going on for students. Whether it's pizza, movie nights, sand volleyball, flag football, or anything else our students think up. Most of our hangouts just happen through relationships and our small groups. The NIU Cheerleading Program is a team full of talented athletes who perform at NIU Football games as well as NIU Basketball Games. In addition, the team also represents NIU at many university and community events throughout the year. The NIU Cheerleading team attends the NCA College Nationals in April each year and has several different performances around Illinois in the early spring.

NIU Chemistry Club is a student organization that hosts fun chemistry themed events throughout the academic year. These events include STEAMfest, Chem Demo, and the Research Symposium. STEAMfest is a university wide event that is intended to teach young children about the wonders of the STEAM field. We take part in this event by performing science experiments in the booths and on stage. Chem Demo is a themed experiment demonstration created by Chem Club. This event has our members participate in performing a multitude of experiments for a large audience of children. The Research Symposium is a poster presentation session where students can present their research to other students and professors. The symposium is open to any student that is involved with research and is a great opportunity for students to practice for URAD. Chem Club will also hold professional events in the near future to help students with their future careers by providing tours to industries and hosting presentations. We are the Northern Illinois Huskies Club Baseball team that competes in the NCBA Northern Plains-Central Conference. Dance Marathon, also known as Huskiethon at Northern Illinois University, is a non-profit organization that uses fundraisers to raise money for the families of the children of Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago. College campuses nationwide host their own Dance Marathon events and raise money for the local pediatric hospital near their campus. Miracle Network Dance Marathon has raised over $300 million for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals since 1991 and has continued to raise more money in the coming years. The Dance Marathon at NIU fundraises year-round for the event that happens in the spring. All profit made goes towards helping the children who have suffered illness or injury and attended Lurie Children's Hospital for care.

The team had meager beginnings, starting out with only the required number of players to field a team and hand-me-down Football Jersey's to wear as uniforms. Since then, the oldest club sport at NIU has grown into a strong program. The team plays in the GLLL (Great Lakes Lacrosse League) and competes against Big 10 and Big East schools. Playing in this league gives players, who have demanding academic and other personal obligations, the chance to play in a competitive league that is made to reduce travel costs and unnecessarily long road trips. In past years the NIU Lacrosse Club has reached new heights, from placing 4th in the GLLL and having the top ranked defense in the league in 2011 to finishing as Chicago Conference Champions in 2012. NIU Men's Lacrosse continues this streak with a 3rd place finish in the Chicago Windy City tournament in 2021.

The Mock Trial team participates in collegiate mock trial competitions. Mock trial participants play the roles of attorneys and witnesses in trial simulations while competing against other colleges and universities in tournaments. They are judged by practicing attorneys and judges, and often times compete in real courtrooms. Mock trial helps prelaw students learn legal principles and the nature of trial advocacy. The purpose of Music & Memory is to promote and carry out the core mission of the parent Music & Memory non-profit organization, which is to improve quality of life for individuals with dementia living in long-term care using music (Music & Memory). Since its inception, we have grown our Music & Memory program beyond the boundaries of the national Music & Memory organization to include active singing (Bridges Choir), personalized reminiscence (Memory Books, Life Stories) and interactive, inter-generational programming ("Zoom-Pals"). Students joining Music & Memory are provided training in dementia basics and for interacting with individuals with cognitive-communicative impairments. Students are also given the option of assisting with data collection and analysis towards our secondary purpose of maximizing evidence-based practice in dementia care. Beginning in Fall 2020, we moved much of our programming to a supervised, zoom format to maximize interpersonal interaction while complying with CDC regulations. Our goal for the 2022-23 academic year is to reintroduce in-person interactions while taking the proper precautions to ensure the safety of all individuals. In addition, we hope to expand our program by bringing awareness to brain health within the DeKalb community. These flexible options allow for multiple areas of interest for anyone looking to volunteer within the DeKalb community and make a significant difference in the lives of others.
