Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian Martial Art that incorporates dance, acrobatics, and is commanded by music and energetic song. Its origins come from the Afro-Brazilian slaves who used this art as a means to strengthen community, revolt against their oppressors, it is an art-form that is over 500 years old.

Students that participate in the Afro-Brazilian Capoeira Club learn how to give back to the community through artistic performances. They serve as ambassadors of culture engaging the larger community through music, song, and movement. They lead workshops that help expand the multicultural awareness of others.

Alpha Phi Gamma is the first Asian American sorority, established on February 1,
1994, at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The Seven Sisters who founded the
sorority are Allex Choi, Candy Cunanan, Christine Nguyen, Sandie Rillera, Kolleen Kim,
Grace Hsieh and Jennifer Oku. Through their hard work and determination the sorority is
now recognized as the first Asian Greek Sorority at Cal Poly Pomona. These Sisters wanted
to bring together all women of different nationalities through the bonds of friendship and
Sisterhood. Alpha Phi Gamma was established to promote service and Asian Awareness to
the University and to the community. The Sorority's basis is its pride in being open to new

Alpha Phi Omega (APO) is NIU's first and oldest co-ed service fraternity. Our chapter was founded on campus in November 1928. We are Northern Illinois University's anime club located in Room 170AC in the Stevens Building on campus in DeKalb, Illinois. Our main activity is publicly showing different types of Japanese Animation (called anime), including movies, TV series, and direct-to-video releases. We show a variety of genres which include drama, comedy, romance, action, adventure, science fiction, and historical. These showings take place every Tuesday night and Thursday night from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm during the Fall and Spring Semesters. The Asian American Certificate Program educates NIU students about the Asian American experience. Similar to chemistry club there can be opportunities to be involved in STEM fest and with a more inclusive biology club there will be a larger space for students to further develop their interest in biology. In addition to helping students create engaging relationships with like minded students, BUSA serves to create a better student and faculty relationship. To fulfill this effort BUSA has and will continue to host annual welcome back events for students and faculty/staff, as well as hosting our final meeting of the academic school year at the annual biology awards ceremony.

The Northern Illinois University Black Choir (NBC) was founded in 1968 by Kenneth Moore Lenon, on the college campus of Northern Illinois University. The foundation of this organization is that it served as the first non-Greek Black organization on the campus of NIU. Founded during a time of racial disparities and discrimination NBC was an outlet and a family for many Black students who loved music but did not have access to the universities choir. The Northern Illinois University Black Choir remains a dominant force on campus while providing, uplifting song, encouragement, and perpetuate the culture of music and other fine arts from the African American experience. The purpose of the choir is to be a performing group that presents and sings gospel and secular music so as to present the context, purpose, and meaning of gospel and secular music; which is Afro-American music with its origin in the earliest hymn traditions of slavery, combining spirituals, blues and jazz. We share cultural and genuine enjoyment of gospel music which acknowledges the benefits from an appreciation of cultural difference while maintaining a lifestyle of leadership.

The NIU Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club has been around campus for over 10 years and running! We practice and compete in the grappling sport of Jiu-Jitsu with members who have trained for years and teaching new members who are interested in learning a new martial art. We practice Tuesday-Thursday 7-9 at the Chick Evans field house and compete roughly 2-4 times a semester. All are welcome to learn the great Martial Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at NIU is dedicated to increasing the world's knowledge and understanding of Southeast Asia's 11 countries through academic endeavor and public outreach.

Established in 1963, CSEAS grew out of one of the first Peace Corps training programs for Southeast Asia volunteers. Since 1997, CSEAS has been designated a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center, the only such center on campus. As such, it offers funding for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as program funding for community outreach, K-16 teacher training and faculty support. CSEAS also actively partners with U.S. government departments, international entities and other organizations on academic and youth leadership training programs.

NIU Chemistry Club is a student organization that hosts fun chemistry themed events throughout the academic year. These events include STEAMfest, Chem Demo, and the Research Symposium. STEAMfest is a university wide event that is intended to teach young children about the wonders of the STEAM field. We take part in this event by performing science experiments in the booths and on stage. Chem Demo is a themed experiment demonstration created by Chem Club. This event has our members participate in performing a multitude of experiments for a large audience of children. The Research Symposium is a poster presentation session where students can present their research to other students and professors. The symposium is open to any student that is involved with research and is a great opportunity for students to practice for URAD. Chem Club will also hold professional events in the near future to help students with their future careers by providing tours to industries and hosting presentations. The Student Advisory Committee (SAC) for the College of Visual and Performing Arts will advise, support, and assist the Dean in promoting the general welfare of students of the College, and to foster greater College-wide identity. The SAC will primarily advise the Dean as to the needs and concerns of students in each School, and to share information about events, opportunities, programs, etc. Through individual and collective efforts, the Student Advisory Committee will advocate for the College of Visual and Performing Arts and bring relevant individual experiences and insights into the process. The work of the Student Advisory Committee will complement School-level efforts by focusing primarily on College-wide goals. From Bylaws: The committee will meet quarterly with the dean and/or the associate dean as an advisory body on matters of direct concern to students. In addition, the Student Advisory Committee will meet on its own to conduct the college nominations of its candidates for the annual Excellence in undergraduate Teaching Award.

Dance Marathon, also known as Huskiethon at Northern Illinois University, is a non-profit organization that uses fundraisers to raise money for the families of the children of Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago. College campuses nationwide host their own Dance Marathon events and raise money for the local pediatric hospital near their campus. Miracle Network Dance Marathon has raised over $300 million for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals since 1991 and has continued to raise more money in the coming years. The Dance Marathon at NIU fundraises year-round for the event that happens in the spring. All profit made goes towards helping the children who have suffered illness or injury and attended Lurie Children's Hospital for care.

NIU Forensics is one of the oldest student organizations on campus.  Formed in 1928, this organization has played an integral role in the lives of thousands of students from diverse academic backgrounds.  "Forensics" is a term derived from Aristotle's ancient text, The Rhetoric, which then meant the particular kind of speaking associated with the legal sphere.  Today "forensics" is a term used to describe organizations devoted to the study and practice of public speaking and performance.  Particular emphasis is placed on skills associated with advocacy and activism; however additional activities include other forms of oral expression, such as dramatic interpretation, poetry and prose.

Additionally, Hues Magazine intends to expose the NIU student body to various cultures, expressions and customs in fashion, beauty, and art through created magazine content, community service and special events as a means for spreading artistic inspiration and more meaningful connection with students from different walks of life. Along with these values, our goal is also to give way for writers and english/journalism majors to enrich their writing experience outside of their courses by networking with other students both in and outside of their respective field, and have an opportunity to put their skills to the test through consistent application in a creative space.
