The Asian American Certificate Program educates NIU students about the Asian American experience. By learning about Asian American people and their impact on communities and the world, students acquire skills that help them stand out in the global job market. In addition to knowledge of Asian American cultures, they gain an understanding of the importance of diversity in society.

We also collaborate with campus offices and cultural centers, such as the Asian American Resource Center and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, to recruit students. he CBS conducts research on the experiences of people of African descent and offers a minor in Black Studies. The Center for Burma Studies is a non-political, non-degree granting, administrative and academic unit within Northern Illinois University. The Center has the following goals:

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at NIU is dedicated to increasing the world's knowledge and understanding of Southeast Asia's 11 countries through academic endeavor and public outreach.

Established in 1963, CSEAS grew out of one of the first Peace Corps training programs for Southeast Asia volunteers. Since 1997, CSEAS has been designated a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center, the only such center on campus. As such, it offers funding for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as program funding for community outreach, K-16 teacher training and faculty support. CSEAS also actively partners with U.S. government departments, international entities and other organizations on academic and youth leadership training programs.

The IL-BRFSS Lab consists of an experienced team of surveyors who conduct live telephone interviews. Currently, the lab's project includes fielding a behavioral health study, the Illinois Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (IL-BRFSS). The results from those surveys can be utilized in healthcare policy and healthcare resources decisions.

The Student Advisory Committee (SAC) for the College of Visual and Performing Arts will advise, support, and assist the Dean in promoting the general welfare of students of the College, and to foster greater College-wide identity. The SAC will primarily advise the Dean as to the needs and concerns of students in each School, and to share information about events, opportunities, programs, etc. Through individual and collective efforts, the Student Advisory Committee will advocate for the College of Visual and Performing Arts and bring relevant individual experiences and insights into the process. The work of the Student Advisory Committee will complement School-level efforts by focusing primarily on College-wide goals. From Bylaws: The committee will meet quarterly with the dean and/or the associate dean as an advisory body on matters of direct concern to students. In addition, the Student Advisory Committee will meet on its own to conduct the college nominations of its candidates for the annual Excellence in undergraduate Teaching Award.

Also on campus, the Faraday Library serves faculty and students in chemistry and physics while the Music Library supports the music department’s curriculum and performances. The Illinois AHEC Network works to improve the supply, distribution and quality of health care professionals in Illinois. It improves health care for the underserved by promoting health careers to students, enriching learning environments for current students, and providing professional development opportunities. Our regional centers partner with universities and health care organizations, encouraging collaboration and advancing local solutions to health care problems. These activities support our overall goal of achieving an equitable distribution of health professionals and services throughout all Illinois communities and regions.

Early preparation – Opportunities to observe health professionals at work and having exposure to possibilities can set elementary and high school students on the path to a rewarding career.

Higher education – The undergraduate years are pivotal in preparation for many clinical careers, and bachelor’s level preparation can open the door to many fields. Some health careers require graduate degrees or advanced clinical degrees. In Illinois, our underserved rural and urban communities are in dire need of primary care clinicians, dentists, psychiatrists, and physical therapists. Behavioral health needs often go unmet, a situation that will only be addressed by training more professionals with appropriate expertise

Unique programs and opportunities – Throughout the state, our partner hospitals and organizations passionately work on the front lines of health care delivery and access. The National Center for Rural Health Professions, the Rural Medical Education program and the Urban Medicine Program provide unrivaled opportunities for those aspiring to work in in areas of acute need. We offer B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. programs in physics. The B.S degree has emphases in Professional Physics, Applied Physics and Physics Secondary Education (teacher licensure). The M.S. program has specializations in Basic Physics, Applied Physics and Physics Teaching. Our faculty have close links with Fermilab and Argonne National Lab, and often involve undergrad and graduate students in research.

You will experience traditional classroom instruction as well as laboratory courses. All undergraduate physics majors also complete a capstone research project as part of their degree.

The Presidential Commission on Race and Ethnicity (PCORE) is the oldest commission in existence on the NIU campus. The PCORE, being the first of its kind at NIU, served as an example and led the way in the development of other existing presidential commissions representing the rich diversity of NIU.

The commission advises the president on the status of minority students, faculty and staff and recommends improvements in the quality of life and opportunities for ethnic minorities in the university community. Commission members serve on behalf of the entire university community.

The PCORE has always advocated for all ethnic minorities represented on campus and in the surrounding community and region. The commission’s influence on the work environment, climate, as well as the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, staff and students, continue to be significant as the commission strives to assist in meeting its avowed goals of diversity and equal treatment for all.
